Celiac disease, also known as coeliac disease, is an autoimmune disorder triggered by the consumption of gluten-containing foods in genetically predisposed individuals. Symptoms can vary widely among individuals, but some common symptoms include:
Digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, and abdominal pain
Fatigue and weakness
Weight loss or difficulty gaining weight
Anemia (low red blood cell count) due to malabsorption of nutrients
Bone or joint pain
Dermatitis herpetiformis, a skin rash characterized by itchy, blistering lesions
Nausea and vomiting
Mouth ulcers
Delayed growth or failure to thrive in children
Neurological symptoms such as headaches, tingling sensations in the extremities, and difficulty with balance and coordination (less common)
It's important to note that symptoms can vary in severity and may not always be gastrointestinal. Some individuals with celiac disease may experience few or no symptoms at all, a condition known as "silent celiac disease." If you suspect you may have celiac disease, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and management.
